The annual trend study representing the latest numbers and facts around the
German online tourism market is out now. 268 executives resp. decision-makers of
the national and international tourism branch gave answers about their
commitment in online tourism. As usual the survey focused on figures and facts
regarding the results of the running online-business, the experiences, the
present development as well as the appraisal of the tourist future.
The boom of online tourism is continuing and also in 2008 the
touristic Ecommerce could present itself with increments. In 2008, the german
tourism industry could achieve 18,02 bn euro just via the internet. The
whole industry achieved during the same period 47,98 bn euro and
displayed again an increase which mainly results from online tourism. In
comparison to 2007, the achieved online increments increased about 21 %.
Opposite to the preceding year, the expansion rate increased slightly, but
clearly stays behind the good data until 2005. Also in 2008 the tourism industry
as a whole is presenting itself as a dynamic economic sector and as big income
earner in the WWW. The global economic crisis barely influenced the results from
2008 because most of the commercial operations had been transacted before the
crisis occurred. In the field of consumers (B2C), tourism achieves a bit more
than a quarter of the whole german Ecommerce. The growth in online tourism has
diminished during the last years, but also during the next years the growth
rates will remain double-digit. While the growth rate of 2003 was at about 64 %
in comparison to 2002, in 2008 it was at about 20 % in comparison to 2007. A
particularity of 2008 is the fact that for the very first time more
tourisitc performances were sold via the internet than in stationary travel
agencies.

The purpose of the annual market research is to document the present state of
the "Ecommerce in on-line tourism in Germany" and to compare the results with
the years before.
